Head Of IQRA Loses Outraging Modesty Appeal

Bandar Seri Begawan – Fifty-eight-year-old Haji Mashud bin Haji Damit, the head of IQRA, earlier convicted of five charges of outraging modesty was sentenced to serve two years and eight months in jail in total for five charges of outraging the modesty of two women.

The defendant appealed against the sentence in the High Court.

It was dismissed by the court which ruled that it was not excessive taking into consideration all mitigating factors on the defendant’s side while also dealing with the seriousness of the offences committed by the defendant, and the defendant having claimed trial to all the charges earlier in the magistrate’s court.

The defendant, also the first Brunei Qari (Quran reading) champion in 1977 at the International Quran Reading Competition, committed the offences at Sekolah Rendah IQRA in Kampong Manggis I, Jalan Muara whilst holding the position of chairman at the school, on five different occasions in 2005 and 2006 against two women teachers at the school by physically outraging their modesty.
